Spring Road Status Report

On Saturday, April 29, Dick Fisher (Cabin 85), along with his two sons, Damon and Zach, and Dick’s grandson Charlie, made a quick visit to the Southwest Shore to check on the access to their cabin at the end of Spring Road. Here is Dick’s report on their visit…

Damon, Zach, Charlie, and I drove up for a quickie visit yesterday morning (beautiful clear and sunny day, temp in low 70s).  Snow melted in all south-influenced areas but some shaded areas on north-facing slopes still holding 1-3’ of snow.  Keystone Pt. Rd. open, and acting as an open stream, shedding water all the way down.  We walked in on Spring Road from the Turnaround to Kidd Cove.  It is getting close to opening, but not yet, due to isolated snowpack areas of 2-3’ blocking vehicle access in three or four places.  All springs and creeks/streams (including minor seasonal ones) are running strong.  Lake beautiful, clear water, 6’ to 7’ down but still filling due to snowmelt (and there is still a ton of snow on the north-facing slopes above the highway so we should expect active creeks and streams well into summer).  Colder weather expected this coming week, with some rain and snow.  We are rooting for rain, as it helps move the snow downhill to the lake.  Overall, we are hoping for a mid-May opening of the cabin, at earliest, since we are dependent upon vehicle access upon Spring Road, and assuming we will be in before Memorial Weekend.

Two photos of Spring Road, taken by Bill Bowes on Friday, April 28, show (1) a large puddle and snow field in front of Cabin 38, just west of the Spring Road gate; and (2) a relatively dry stretch of Spring Road a little further west in front of Cabin 43. Snow is melting fast, with the water heading toward the lake.
