Southwest Shore Association
The Southwest Shore Association is comprised of all individuals and families that own a cabin in the Southwest Shore Colony and hold a Special Recreation Residence Permit from the Forest Service to use that land. As a result of cabin ownership in the Colony, an owner automatically becomes a member of the Southwest Shore Association.
The SWS Association is a loosely organized, all volunteer association that attempts to facilitate communication among cabin owners and the Forest Service, to enable cooperation on projects that affect all cabin owners and families in the Southwest Shore Colony, and to promote camaraderie among all SWS Colony owners and families.
The Annual Meeting of the Association is held once per year, generally in July. Communication with cabin owners is accomplished by means of this Southwest Shore website and by periodic electronic newsletters. Dues are collected as necessary to cover any administrative expenses and to finance any special projects and activities that affect the Southwest Shore Colony as a whole. In recent years such projects have included removal of hazardous dead trees, and annual brush clean-up and removal. We financially support the efforts of National Forest Homeowners (NFH), which lobbies for policies and legislation that benefit all of the 13,000+ Recreational Residence Forest Service Cabins nationwide, like ours at the Big Bear Southwest Shore.
Within the Southwest Shore Colony there are various subgroups, such as the Keystone Road Association, the Don Carlos Water Association, and the Spring Road Association. These are subgroups of the total membership that are directly affected by a particular road or water facility within the Southwest Shore. These subgroups finance and administer their own local projects and activities as necessary.
The main administrative activities of the Association are holding Annual Meetings, managing Association finances, publishing periodic newsletters, and maintaining the SWS website. In addition, volunteers represent the Association at meetings of the San Bernardino National Forest Cabin Coalition (SBNFCC) and National Forest Homeowners (NFH). Organization
The Association is administered by a volunteer group of cabin owners that serve as project leaders and steering committee. Within this group, the only “official” officers are a President and a Secretary/Treasurer.Newsletters and Website
